Precision Medicine Computing & Storage Platform

This platform provides secure and scalable computing and storage services to support biomedical and clinical research activities at the University of Bologna, including collaborations with external partners within approved research projects.

The infrastructure is designed to handle computationally intensive workloads and large-scale medical datasets, while operating in compliance with GDPR and in alignment with ISO/IEC 27001 information security practices.

The platform follows a self-service model, where authorized users can independently run analyses and manage data within a controlled environment.

Available services

The platform currently provides two main services:

1. High Performance Computing (HPC)

A self-service HPC cluster for scientific computing and AI workloads, featuring:

  • CPU and GPU compute nodes
  • Job scheduling via SLURM
  • High-performance project storage
  • Support for containers and custom environments

The HPC service enables users to run bioinformatics pipelines, machine learning workflows, large-scale simulations, and reproducibility studies.

2. Geodistributed S3 storage

An S3-compatible object storage system designed for:

  • Secure storage of medical and research datasets
  • Controlled data sharing among members of a research project

The storage system is geodistributed across multiple university sites to ensure resilience, availability, and data protection.

Who should use this platform

This platform is intended for:

  • Professors, researchers, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers of the University of Bologna
  • Master’s degree students of the University of Bologna involved in thesis projects (HPC access only)
  • Research groups within the University of Bologna working with biomedical and clinical data
  • Authorized external collaborators participating in approved research projects with the University of Bologna

Access to services is granted on a project basis following a formal authorization process.

The authorization process, access conditions, and applicable policies are described in the relevant sections of the platform website, including Access & Eligibility and Policies & Governance.
